How it all Works

I would like to take this space to explain how my math class works and the expectations I have for the students.

1.  When students come into my class, there will be a math question on the board.  This question is a sample AZMerit or Galileo test question.  Students work as a team to solve the problem and share the responsibility of making sure each team member understands the question, the vocabulary, the process and ultimately the answer.

2.  Whole group/ Teacher led instruction.  I will take 30 minutes to teach the math lesson as designated by the Engage NY math curriculum.  This is a standards based, grade level lesson.  As we discuss sample questions, students are encouraged to help one another and to ask for help.

3.  Stations:  Students are grouped into ability levels and rotate through the following four stations:

            1.  Kozmosis:  This center is computer based.  The students are retaught the lesson I just went over during whole                     group instruction time.

            2.  Exact Path:  This center is computer based.  The students took a diagnostic test and the computer assigns the                     students lessons based off of the test results.

            3.  Math Magazine:  This center is literacy driven.  Students read high interest math articles that reinforce the                           lesson taught during whole group instruction.

            4.  Teacher Station:  Students work with me in small groups.  We review the lesson of the day and work on areas                     where students need additional support.

4.  Exit Ticket: All students return to their seats and complete one problem based on the lesson of the day.  I use this exit ticket to determine if the students need additional support the next day.

My expectations are:

1.  Students will try.

2.  I expect 80% or higher percentage of effort from every student.

3.  I expect students to ask questions.

4.  I expect students to say "I don't know."

5.  I expect students will be doing there work at the stations.

6.  I expect students to help other students.

7.  I expect students to be receptive to help from other students.

8.  I expect students to say "I need help."

9.  I expect students will be part of the class TEAM.

If students meet my expectations then they can expect to be VICTORIOUS AND WIN!
